5 Inexpensive Ways to Spruce Up your Space

Don’t want to spend a fortune on re-designing your space, but are in need of some updates? Here are a few cost effective ways that can make a difference to your space.

Lighting

Lighting can completely change a space. Although lighting can sometimes be costly, there are so many stores that carry incredible brands that meet the budget of every consumer.

Recommended Stores: Wayfair & Home Depot

Pro Tip:“Go for fixtures that provide a small contrast to your space and attract the eye. Lighting should not only be used for functionality, but also as a source of focus in your space. Don’t be afraid to mix styles and be creative!” - Kiersten Didham

Hardware

Hardware can be a very inexpensive way to change up your space. They can change the look of your cabinetry by switching for something glam or modern. They can also be used to change simple things in your house like door knobs that add a more sophisticated look to your space.

Recommended Stores: Richelieu & Berenson

Pro Tip:“Modern gold and glass hardware are so in right now! Mix up your styles and shapes. Do not be afraid to use round knobs with long pulls or the mixture of any other style.” - Kiersten Didham

Switch Plates

Small details make a BIG difference! Get rid of your simple switch plates and upgrade them for something interesting.

Recommended Stores: Home Depot & Anthropology & Wayfair

Pro Tip:Choose something that brings a subtle pop to your space. You do not want to go with something that shows a drastic design contrast or else it will truly ‘stick out like a sore thumb’. Opt for something that is similar to your current room theme to avoid it being tacky, but something that still adds significant detailing to your space.

Drapery

With so many styles and a fairly low-medium price tag, drapery is one of the easiest items to swap out in your space to bring it back to life. Swapping out fabrics/colors, changing the heights of your drapery and laying drapery on the wall as decor are three simple changes that make big difference.

Recommended Stores: Wayfair, Bouclair, Blinds Drapes Etc, & Madison Makenzie Home

Pro Tip:Do not be afraid to play with bold colors and patterns. Your drapery is meant to stand out a little or a lot! Play with heights, who said you drapery had to sit right above the window? Play with widths as well. Having wide panels that lay against your wall next to the window add more dimension and color to the space. They do not necessarily have to be the width to just fit the window.

Paint

In a world filled with endless color options, do not be afraid to mix up your paint options. For large spaces, change up your paint every 8-10 years and choose neutral colors that you won’t get tired of. For smaller spaces, change up your paint ever 5-8 years. Smaller rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms require less labour, therefore it is easier to change more frequently and gives you more room to play with color and your decor to create different spaces every few years.

Recommended Stores: Benjamin Moore & Dulux

Pro Tip:Go with a bold accent wall, do not be afraid to paint your ceiling, create different dimensions within paint (for example have a chair rail trim placed 2’ on your wall from your ceiling, paint a light neutral color in that section and paint the rest of the wall a dark or bold color!)
